Made with love in New Zealand.

Photographer Cam Neate and floral stylist Lucy Houghton explore the narrative of being a wallflower in their latest still life series, Observations of a Wallflower. The pastel subjects are brought to life through a series of fly-on-the-wall observations, playing on the idea that perhaps the things we do not often pay much attention to are in fact the most observant.

Lucy and I had been wanting to collaborate on a series together for a long time. Through the first lock down in 2020, we began sharing ideas and references for a floral still life shoot that combined our shared passion of a pastel pallet and unique, other-worldly visuals. Lucy’s arrangements have a lot of character and intrigue and after weeks of staring at them on my computer I felt we needed to expand on the idea of them as living subjects. It wasn’t until after this shoot that I started seeing floral images in a lot of homes and I thought it was funny how I’d never really noticed that before. We spoke about how it would be cool to play on that narrative, of how we never pay attention to the flowers on the wall but perhaps the flowers have been observing us and our everyday conversations.
